UNIPHIN and UNI Global Union Nepal Lead Pivotal Discussion on Creating a Safer Work Environment in the Care Sector During 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

On the 13th day of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a significant milestone was reached as UNIPHIN (United Nations Industrial and Hazardous Substance Workers’ Union) and UNI Global Union Nepal Liaison Council jointly organized a compelling panel discussion. The event took place on the 7th of December, 2023, focusing on the theme “Creating a Safer World of Work for All in the Care Sector.”

The panel discussion brought together a diverse group of experts, activists, and professionals, all dedicated to addressing the pervasive issue of gender-based violence (GBV) within the context of the care sector. This sector, encompassing healthcare, social work, and other caregiving professions, plays a crucial role in society but is unfortunately not immune to the challenges of GBV.

The discussions delved into the multifaceted aspects of creating a safer working environment, emphasizing the importance of fostering a culture of respect, equality, and zero tolerance for violence. Panelists shared insights into the unique challenges faced by individuals working in the care sector, including unequal power dynamics, harassment, and discrimination.

One of the key highlights of the event was the exploration of proactive measures and policies that could be implemented to mitigate GBV risks in the workplace. Participants emphasized the need for comprehensive training programs, awareness campaigns, and the establishment of clear reporting mechanisms to ensure the safety and well-being of all workers in the care sector.

Furthermore, the panelists highlighted the role of unions and global organizations in advocating for stronger legal frameworks and policies that specifically address GBV in the workplace. The importance of collaboration between unions, employers, and governmental bodies was underscored as a vital step towards creating lasting change.

The event served as a platform for sharing best practices and success stories from around the world, demonstrating that progress is possible when stakeholders come together to prioritize the safety of those working in the care sector. Participants left the discussion with a renewed commitment to advancing gender equality and combating GBV in all its forms.

As the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence continued, the panel discussion organized by UNIPHIN and UNI Global Union Nepal Liaison Council stood as a testament to the collective effort needed to create a safer, more equitable world of work for everyone involved in the vital care sector. The impact of such initiatives extends beyond the event itself, contributing to a broader global movement aimed at eradicating gender-based violence and fostering workplaces where everyone can thrive without fear.
