VICTORY FOR NEPALESE UNION WINS LANDMARK FREE HEALTH INSURANCE FOR COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS

In a triumphant culmination to their relentless campaign, the Nepalese unions with substantial support from UNI Global Union, has successfully secured 100 percent free health insurance for female community health workers (FCHWs) and their families in Bagmati Province, a landmark initiative that underscores the resolute advocacy of unions in Nepal. 

This victory is marked by the announcement made recently setting to benefit countless FCHVs across Bagmati Province, assuring enhanced wellbeing and security through free health insurance provisions. 

Previously, the community health volunteers were encumbered by a 1,750 rupee premium, a financial strain that has now been completely alleviated through this innovative collaboration. Basanti Maharjan, President of HEVON/FCHWU, radiated optimism and resolution, stating, “We are gradually organizing and gaining union power. We have been submitting our demands to the concerned government authorities, marking the beginning of our achievements.” UNI Global Union has evidently been instrumental in enhancing the influence and operational capacity of HEVON FCHWU, fostering substantial improvements for the community health volunteers in Bagmati Province. 

Rajendra Acharya, Regional Secretary of UNI Global Union Asia & Pacific, conveyed his congratulations to the union and emphasized the essential role of unions in Nepal. “This achievement is a testament to the resilience and dedication of the Nepal unions and underscores the vital role unions play in advancing social justice and worker rights in Nepal. Together, we are building a brighter, healthier future for all,” he remarked. 

The province’s Minister of Health, Mr. Uttam Joshi, made the official announcement last Thursday, highlighted the federal government’s contribution through a 50 percent discount and the provincial government’s coverage of the remaining premium, ensuring a comprehensive health insurance scheme. 

This venture emphasized the commitment to the welfare of female health workers showcasing the synergistic efforts of unions and governmental entities in advancing public health and social equity. The tireless endeavors of unions like HEVON/FCHWU, supported by UNI Global Union, continue to drive progressive change, making strides in establishing robust worker rights and social justice in Nepal.
